Danube Delta was declared a biosphere
reserve in 1990, by the Goverment of Romania, and by the Romanian
Parliament through Law 80/1983, modified and completed by the Law
454/2001. The single delta in the world declared a biosphere reserve
is one of the world largest wetland, especialy as waterfowl habitat,
and the greatest reedbed expanses worlwide.
The Integrational recognition
- The universal value if the reserve was recognized by the
Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme of UNESCO, through its
inclusion in the international network of biosphere reserves
- The DDBR was listed as a wetland of international importance
especially as waterfowl habitat under the Ramsar Convention
- The universal natural heritage value of th reserve was
recognized by the inclusion of the strictly protected areas in the
World Heritage List under the World Cultural and Natural
Heritage Convention
The zones of DDBR with
respect to management for nature conservaion and ecologivally
sustainable management
- Stricly protected areas - 18 sites and cover a total of
50 600 hectares, include realatively unspoilt places with
excellent examles of terrestrial and wetland ecosystems and
generally support the most sesnsitive species found in the DDBR
- Buffer zones - 13 zones and cover a total of 223 300
hectares, includee areas with biological chracteristics, likley
teh previous ones, mitigate the impact of the human activities on
the strictly protected areas
- Economic zones - cover a total of 306 101 hectares,
iclude areas where traditoinal allowed activities are undertaken,
in the limits of the support capacity
- Area for ecological restoration where Danube Delta
Biosphere Reserve Authority carries on activities for ecological
restoration
The main objectives of the DDBRA
for the management of the Biosphere Reserve are:
- Conservation and protection of the existing natural heritage
- Encouragement of sustainable use of the natural resources
- Provision if soupport, based on the results of research, for
management, education, training, and services
Biodiversity
- A real natural museum of biodiversity, wich includes 30 types
of echosystems
- More than 5000 flora and fauna species, of wich 1689 flora
species and 3448 fauna species
- Most of the European population of common pelican
Pelecanus onocrotalus (8000 exemplars) and dalmatian
pelican Pelecanus cispus (200 exemplars)
- 60% from world population of pygmy cormorant Phalacrocorax
pymaeus
- 50% from world population of red breasted goose Branta
ruficollis (during winter season)

The Danube
Delta Biosphere Reserve, hosting an amaizing range of habitats and
life forms, in a realively small area, is a real museum of
biodiversity, a natural genetic bank with incalculable value for the
worldwide natural heritage.
